For a number of years, YPAC has secured funding to work at Holland Street Community Gardens. YPAC runs a weekly after-school session on a Tuesday working with young people from Park View Primary School and the local area. Local resident and experienced artist Dot Lomax works on the sessions with us, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the session. When the young people arrive we discuss what can be grown during specific months. Strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, cherries, apples, plums & pears are a constant on the community garden.
It is a great opportunity for young people to learn watch plants grow from planting to harvest. Each week the young people pick and eat the fruit that they have grown and take home fruit and vegetables to their family. We currently have pumpkins growing on the outer beds that will be ready in time for Halloween. The outer beds also house potatoes, kale and a herb garden all of which the young people chose to grow. In the winter months, we still run the session from inside Queensbury court, where we plan what can be grown in the spring, summer and autumn months. This time of year is also an opportunity for the young people to express their artistic side as we run garden-themed arts and crafts.
